It was an existing church and house site in an older neighborhood that was underutilized and not sustainable. We demolished the existing buildings and got rezoning from the City of Edmonton for a church, a daycare, and a 16-unit townhouse of affordable housing for large families. When we increased the density of the site we helped revitalize the neighborhood.
We demolished the old church and saved what we could, which included the wood roof deck and glue lams - these were reused in the new church. The buildings are of wood frame with heavy timber accents, which are appealing and sustainable building products.
The project is net-zero with no gas line to the buildings and it is designed to produce more energy than it uses so this is also sustainable. This was achieved by a very high-performance building envelope, high-efficiency equipment, and on-site energy-producing methods. You will notice from the drone pictures that the roofs were covered with photovoltaic panels.
